# Shareholders

Shareholders represent people or companies that own shares in a company. Use shareholder resources to list the shareholders connected to an entity, add manually collected shareholder information, update shareholder details, and inspect where shareholder information came from.

Shareholder relations connect a shareholder to an entity. A relation describes the direction of ownership and can include share counts or ownership percentages. Relation sources identify where the relation information came from.

| Concept | Values |
| - | - |
| Shareholder types | `physical`, `legal`, `unknown` |
| Relation types | `shareholders`, `shareholder_of` |
| Source types | `manual`, `rpc_socio`, `company_verification` |

Manual sources always take precedence over other sources. When the same relation is reported by multiple non-manual sources, the most recent update wins.

For the shareholders metrics insight, use `GET /entities/{entityId}/insights/metrics/shareholders` with `relations.relationType=shareholders`. When Company Verification data is available, it uses shareholder rows from the entity's most recent report; manually entered values take precedence for relations that have both sources.

Use promotion when a shareholder should become its own entity. Promotion creates an entity for the shareholder so you can connect datasources and continue working with that person or company directly.
