# Background checks

> Understand the sources, records, and requirements used in Background Checks.

Background Checks provide screening and verification data for an entity. Use these resources to list checks, retrieve a specific check, download its PDF report, and inspect the records found during the check.

Records contain the detailed results behind a Background Check. They are organized by category and database so you can review the information that contributed to the check.

## Requirements

You can request a Background Check without entity onboarding or SAT credentials. For a company, provide its RFC. For a person, provide both the RFC and CURP.

Follow [Request data without credentials](https://docs.syntage.com/using-syntage/dashboard/request-data-without-credentials.md) to create the entity and start the extraction from the dashboard.

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `pending` | The Background Check is being processed. |
| `completed` | The Background Check completed successfully. |
| `error` | The Background Check encountered an error. |

| Country scope | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `MX` | Mexico-specific Background Checks. |
| `ALL` | International Background Checks across multiple countries. |

## Data returned

Each completed check can include:

| Data | What it tells you |
| - | - |
| Category score | The result and severity for an area such as personal identity, legal background, taxes and finances, media alerts, sanctions, or PEP screening. |
| Database status | The named database that was consulted, its country scope, and whether the consultation completed. |
| Records | Matches returned by a database. Each record contains source-specific sections and fields. |
| PDF report | A human-readable summary of the check and its findings. |

A database can complete without returning a match. Use database statuses to confirm what was consulted and records to inspect what was found.

## Sources used

Syntage combines specialized providers with direct access to authoritative sources. Syntage selects the source for each category; customers do not need to configure a provider or supply provider credentials.

| Source | Purpose | Data points available in the Background Check |
| - | - | - |
| Background Check database catalog | Coordinates searches across judicial, sanctions, PEP, tax, regulatory, and adverse-media databases. | Category scores, database name and status, matched records, and source-specific fields. |
| Registro Nacional de Población (RENAPO) | Verifies the identity and CURP status of a person. | CURP, names, surnames, sex, birth date and state, nationality, CURP registration status, probative-document type and data, and the constancia file when available. |
| SAT | Verifies tax identity, digital certificates, and Article 69/69-B listings. | RFC status and registered name, certificate status and dates, and published presumed or definitive fictitious-operation status when present. |
| OpenSanctions | Screens sanctions, terrorism, wanted-person, and PEP datasets. | Matched name and aliases, identifiers, countries, positions or associations, source dataset, and related dates when provided by the source. |
| Adverse-media search | Finds media publications relevant to due diligence. | Article source, title, URL, publication information, and the extracted finding returned for the entity. |

RENAPO is used for people and requires the CURP already supplied for the Background Check. Its availability, and the source used for other categories, can depend on your organization's configuration. No separate RENAPO authorization or credentials are required.
