# BIL reports

BIL reports come from Buró de Investigaciones Legales and summarize legal investigation results for an entity. Use them when your integration needs to review legal-risk findings, keep the original vendor report, or show the report PDF in your own product.

BIL data is collected by running a BIL extraction. The extraction searches BIL using the entity's name, stores the parsed report data, and attaches the original XML and PDF report files.

## How BIL Reports Work

1. Start a BIL extraction for the entity.
2. Poll the extraction until it reaches a terminal status.
3. List the entity's BIL reports.
4. Retrieve the report by ID when you need the full report data or file references.
5. Download the XML or PDF file through the Files API.

## Requirements

The entity must have a name. BIL searches are name-based, so the extraction cannot run for an entity without a name.

BIL is a premium datasource. Before the `bil` extractor can run via the API, your organization must have a signed agreement acknowledging responsibility for BIL charges, including charges caused by mistakes or duplicate requests.

Without that agreement, `POST /extractions` returns a validation error with the violation:

```json theme={null}
{
  "propertyPath": "extractor",
  "message": "This extractor does not support creating extractions via API."
}
```

If you see this error and the entity already has a name, contact your CSM or [Syntage Support](https://docs.syntage.com/using-syntage/faq/organization-billing-and-support.md#how-do-i-contact-support) to complete the BIL agreement before creating BIL extractions via API.

For implementation details, see [Extraction request examples](https://docs.syntage.com/developers/extraction-request-examples.md#bil).

## What BIL searches

BIL searches up to 156 sources and groups the findings in the vendor report. The sources cover the following areas:

| Source group | Purpose and data available |
| - | - |
| Local, federal, and labor courts | Finds published proceedings, notifications, bulletins, edicts, parties, dates, and case identifiers when the court makes them available. |
| Administrative sources | Checks tax, social-security, consumer, business-registry, procurement, concession, and government sanctions records. |
| Political parties and public roles | Checks published party-affiliation rolls, legislators, public officials, PEPs, professional licenses, and other government lists. |
| AML, terrorism, and corruption | Checks sanctions, debarment, terrorism, denied-party, shell-bank, and corrupt-practices lists from Mexico and other countries. |
| Most wanted | Checks wanted-person, fugitive, detention, sex-offender, and law-enforcement lists. |
| International sources | Checks international PEPs, leaks datasets, court records, official gazettes, tax-debtor lists, and records from other countries. |

The fields returned for an individual match depend on the source. BIL preserves those findings in `data` and provides the original XML and PDF so you can review the source labels and evidence included in that report.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Source availability and published records can change. A completed report shows the sources and findings returned for that search; it does not guarantee a match in every source listed below.
